This week is Canada’s National Flag Birthday. It was proclaimed as the new flag after a long debate in the House of Commons in Ottawa. On 15 February 1965 the new Maple Leaf flag replaced the old British Red Ensign on Parliament.
Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson had promised Canadians that a distinctive new Canadian flag would replace the old colonial flag.
After a period of design and consultation with the population and an acrimonius debate in Parliament pitting the Conservative elements against the modern and progressive Liberals the new flag was proclaimed.
