Alexanderplatz, Berlin, BRD, FRG, GDR, Germany, Spree river

This photo of central Berlin, the Capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, re-united and once again the Capital since 1990. It had lost that title in 1946 with the division of Germany by the Allies when the Capital moved to Bonn for the Western part of the Country and the Eastern part kept Berlin, half demolished, bombed out as their capital.

The photo below is East Berlin now known as Mitte or central Berlin. The Princes and Kings of Prussia lived on the island on the Spree River as of the 15th century until 1918. The buildings on the left side of the photo, you have the great dome of the Lutheran Cathedral it was connected to the Imperial Palace across the street, heavily damaged in 1944 it was lovingly restored to what it was like in 1918, the crypt is full of coffins of the Royal Prussian family members. The cathedral is surrounded by several museums all fully restored since 1989 at great expense. The collections are breathtaking, varied and shows the knowledge and quality of the curators who worked for the Hohenzollern family. The long gray facade building on the Spree river is the old stables of the Palace, housing hundred of horses and carriages at one time. The empty space between the cathedral and the stables is occupied today by the reconstruction site of the great City Palace of the German Emperors. On the middle of the photo is St-Nicholas neighbourhood also heavily damaged by aerial allied bombardments in 1942-1944, the churches have been restored and so has the red brick tower and building of Berlin’s City Hall. The modern towers you see in the background is Alexander Platz built to celebrate the visit to Berlin of Russian Tsar Alexander I in 1805, it was re-imagined by the Communists East German government and turned into a typical soulless ugly brutalist architectural monstrosity for army parades, think Red Square or Tien An Men Square in Beijing.

Ascot, Canada., gold cup week, Horse Racing, lead soldiers, Maritimes, miniature, moving, PEI, World

Well a sure sign that we are moving is something I did yesterday, it happens every time and it is the start of packing and preparing for the movers to come. The last time I did this was in June 2011.

I have a collection of about 250 lead soldiers in the 54 mm size and representing regiments from around the world. From the Papal Swiss Guards to Mexico Soldier Cadet School, Prussian, Bavarian, Austrian, Italian, French (Ancient regime) Russian Imperial, British etc… All hand painted and beautifully detailed. Packing them off as it where requires usually 3 full days. They are fragile and must be carefully re-boxed individually.

IMG_1577.jpg

Once this is done that means we are moving and now sorting our books, we have 6 book shelves IKEA style about 48 boxes all together, must be gone through. Then the closets and clothing no longer required given away, even pots and pans in the Kitchen will be sorted and what is no longer used will be discarded. We are not throwing anything away, if it can be given to someone, books to the Municipal Library or clothing to St-Vincent etc.. It will be done that way. We do not thrown away since there is always someone who might be interested in having it.

April is cleaning up month! May is moving to PEI month.

Just noticed that Old Home Week in Charlottetown and the Gold Cup and Saucer Race (PEI’s Ascot Race) is August 11 to 20. Since the early 1960s, the Gold Cup and Saucer Race has been considered one of the most celebrated harness racing events in Eastern Canada. Each August, as a culmination of Old Home Week, the fastest horses and most skilled drivers compete in 15 racing programs in nine days.

One has to wonder about the formula Western Media is following when disaster strike. The media loves to present itself as all knowing and bringing you the facts and the real story, they repeat this constantly as if to re-enforce the fact that the public is ignorant and the so called or pseudo experts parading on the news will explain it all. What is sad is how they invariably get it wrong. Then you have the report of who died and who was injured, it is always the same nationalities, Americans, British, others are mention in passing. In Canada our news service will mention last if any Canadians were injured or died, if you listen to the French news they will only mention casualties from Quebec, the rest don’t matter. Then the Media will tell us that this or that Head of State or Government reacted to the news, usually with the same platitudes, thoughts and prayers, yeah sure.

The Media will always stir up hate against, in this case, immigrants, Muslims, and try to dress up the story as if all this could be settled if only these little people were more reasonable and not so sub-human in their behaviour. The sub-text of the news stories, they are all ingrates and no good and we did everything for them. There will be broad generalizations and gross exaggerations. One example, a group of Canadian students were travelling in the general area but a few hundred kilometres away from the incidents, so they are safe, well yes they were no were near the incident. Again the sub-text is that nowhere is safe and we should all be very afraid, in other words do not get out of bed in the morning. In this sense Canadian Media outlets and no better than any other ones. They like the spin the story in order to play on the fears real or imagine of the masses.

What I find sad about these events is how they are only widely reported if they happen in a large Western City, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Brussels. In the last few weeks other attacks have occurred in Istanbul, Ankara, Yemen, Libya, however we did not hear about them or heard very little.

1958424_1273898749306193_6001996575776755300_n.jpg

Why is that? Are these attacks less important because the people involved who died or were maimed are not like us? We were Charlie after the attack on Charlie Hebdo and everyone ran out to buy a copy of the paper. Then we were Paris and now we are Brussels. It is as if changing your FB icon makes it all fine, is there nothing more intellectually lazy and self satisfied in this FB trend, but then again a sign of our facile consumer society. What does that mean? Not much really and you do not have to think about it too much.

For those who are quick to blame, note that the authors of these attacks are not immigrants, they are born and bred in Belgium and in a strange twist two of them were brothers, had long violent criminal records and were known to the Police but had no links to terrorisms apparently, though one had been arrested by the Turkish Police some time ago for being on the Syrian border area and deported back to the Netherlands and detained until the Belgium Police said they did not know the fellow despite having his criminal record, a very embarrassing situation for the police authorities.

To say that the Belgium Police is incompetent is an understatement, in the last few years several major scandals have exposed a Justice system that is dysfunctional and unable to function properly, corrupt and full of nepotism. Belgium is an economically troubled European country despite being the seat of the European Union and deeply and bitterly divided between its two linguistic communities, it barely functions as a country and again recently saw paralysis in its government with no functioning Cabinet for over a year.

France traced back the terror cell to Belgium immediately after the Paris attacks but it still took four months to find and arrest the main instigator after he had slipped numerous times through police check points in France and in Belgium.

As for these criminals and terrorists, they all come from the same isolated, marginalized, poorly educated and violent suburbs of big cities which are breeding ground for criminality. European suburbs are not pretty, it’s a dumping ground for the poor. Living in ghettoes with little hope of ever integrating main stream society. Their names, religion, colour and background make them outcasts in a Europe that has never been very good at integrating anyone who is not Old Stock National. I saw this phenomenon in Greece, Italy, Turkey, France, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, etc…

Someone painted Europe as this Oasis of civilization and enlightenment, however this is largely a myth based on past history, the 20th century showed us through two world wars what horrors Europeans can visit on each other. With decolonizations in the 1960’s Europe has had large social problems trying to integrate former colonials who flocked to its shore after bloody wars of independence, Algeria (France), the Congo (Belgium), two name two more notorious episodes.

The recent debacle and still un-resolved refuge crisis from Syria and other parts, Afghanistan, Iraq and Sub-Saharan Africa is still un-going and far from resolved.  Europe appears unable or unwilling to deal with any crisis. It is up to Canada to some extent to intervene with our limited means as a middle-power.

ISIS or ISIL will be defeated eventually and the threat is very present at this time, but the defeat will come only if European Police forces coordinate and work with other  National Police Forces, implementing measures to diminish the threat and hiring intelligence Officers who actually have a background in counter terrorism and the required language skills, I know many do not have those skills, laziness and indifference is often the hallmark of many European police authorities. It is apparent that despite the attacks in Europe the threat has not been taken seriously despite the assurances of various politicians who failed to take the full measure of the crisis. So far Turkey has done more than most in Europe. Jordan has also shouldered a great deal of the Humanitarian crisis.

It was revealed last week that with the announcement by President Putin that Russia was pulling out of Syria and reducing its involvement, they had been bombing the Opposition forces to President Assad of Syria, while the USA has been bombing the regular Syrian Army in the hope of toppling President Assad. So who is bombing ISIS, no one, the reason being that Iran and Hezbollah are fighting ISIS and neither the USA or Russia would help because of political differences and the future of President Assad.

As for those criminals belonging to ISIS, they have no program, no political agenda, religion is just a prop but not much more. Yes, they have been able to recruit young naive people with little life experience and little knowledge of the world. The biggest problem is marginalized youth with little prospects and no future who will fall for totalitarian ideas giving them structure they do not have in their own family milieu. It is a complex problem and it needs careful study and not facile solutions we have seen lately that some politicians have been promoting in the hope of electoral success.

One solution to defeating radicalism is to make a place for every one in our Society. Leave no one behind and integrate people no matter where they come from, make them understand that they have something to contribute. The Canadian model has worked based on our own history and traditions, an example for Europe to follow perhaps if they are capable of it, though I doubt it. There will be more attacks of course and more hand wringing and half responses.

In 1976 was the great year of the Montreal Summer Olympic Games, I celebrated by 20th Birthday that year in Montreal with my family. I do not remember exactly what I did, but I do remember attending the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games. I had won excellent seats in the great stadium and it was exhilarating. Then in August I left to start my University courses at Ottawa U. So I arrived in Ottawa at the age of 20.

IMG_1572.jpg

Today some 40 years later I am 60 and just celebrated with some 45 guests this great event here at home. Will arranged a wonderful party, the food was varied and very good, our guests were pleased. Instead of a cake we had 12 dozens of mini cupcakes in various flavours made by Thimble Cakes on Bank Street. Minou of BelFiore on Elgin street prepared a wonderful, delicate floral arrangement for the party. Everyone brought gifts in the form of fine Champagne, wine and single malt scotch, though the request had been made not to bring anything and with it an avalanche of good wishes and cards.

It was so good to see so many friends and old acquaintances, I feel honoured by their presence. Many of whom I have known for all these years and with whom I share so many life experiences here in Canada and abroad.

There has been many Birthdays in between in those 40 years, all around the World, from Istanbul, to Cairo, to Warsaw, to Chicago, to Rome, to Mexico City, To Amman, to Beijing.

What an incredible life it has been and now on the cusp of a new adventure, a new Province a new life. Life goes on with newness. One can only be thankful for all the many blessings.

My little sister came up from NYC with her husband and father in law and reminded me of stories my late parents use to tell about my birth and early childhood. So many stories, happy memories of a time long ago. Will, had gathered some old photos and everyone teased me about how I had not changed that much in 60 years.

Ottawa’s first public timepiece is North America’s second-oldest sundial

17 Thursday Mar 2016

The Capital Ottawa has the second oldest time piece in North America and the first one ever built in the City in 1833. It still works perfectly but few people notice. It will be 165 years old on 29 March.

OTTAWA REWIND

TITLE North America’s second oldest sundial and Ottawa’s first public timepiece sits largely unnoticed on a corner of Sussex Avenue.

This Sunday March 20th the Northern Hemisphere enters The Vernal (Spring) Equinox, an astronomical event in which the plane of the Earth’s equator passes through the centre of the Sun, which occurs twice a year, once in March and again in September. During this event, both day and night are of equal duration across the globe. Ancient cultures like the Mayans would celebrate the occasion by performing rights of fertility. The Norse would worship Eostre, the Norse goddess of fertility and new beginnings, symbolized by eggs and rabbits, traditional symbols of modern day Easter. In addition to these sun worshippers, Ottawa has its own ancient device that harnesses the sun…an old sundial.

At the corner of Bruyère and Sussex in downtown Ottawa there is an unassuming marking on a building that was…

dictators, Election, hate, President, Trump, USA

Because of my age I can remember US Politics back to the 1960’s, though my knowledge was more an impression than deep understanding. I remember JFK and LBJ, that awful Nixon fellow, the quiet Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. I also remember some of the other actors on the political scene of the time. It was another era and politics were no cleaner but it had not sunk to the level we see today. For me it all started to go wrong when Ronald Reagan declared he was a born again Christian, this in the hope of attracting a more conservative vote. I could not understand why the President of all the Americans, many of whom are not Christians needed to say that publicly and what did it say to Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, all non born again Christians. He was staking his claim to represent only that one little group in the entire nation, the others well they were not part of the club. Then we got G.W.Bush, in the words of the Saudi King of the time, a nice man but he knows nothing. A disastrous war with Iraq and for what exactly.

Now we have the Donald and his hate speeches. I have to say that I do not follow nor watch closely what is going on with this election, but the other day I saw a clip made by Rachel Maddow for her show on speeches inciting hate by Trump. Now we see his rallies cancelled because the authorities cannot guarantee safety. People who oppose Trump vocally are beaten by his supporters. Trump offers to pay the legal fees of the attackers.  What Trump was saying clearly, anyone who opposes me must be dealt with, in the good old days these people would get a good beating, anyone who opposes me is the enemy of America and they are dragging our country down. Then he chants USA USA and promises to make America great again. My question is when did America stop being great?

It appears that politicians now divide Americans in categories, it use to be that a US Citizen was equal to all other US Citizens. Now the Brown or Black ones are not considered full citizens and are presented as second class. I know that prior to the Equal Rights Movement blacks and non whites were not equal. Though the USA went through it all and progress was achieved, Trump is proposing to turn back the clock with friends like David Duke of the KKK.  If you are not Evangelical Christian then you too are second class, if you disagree with the Donald then you are a dangerous enemy of the USA. Muslims are all terrorists, not real US Citizens. Jews well Trump and company cannot talk about them, because that is a political bomb, so they pretend they like them because it is politically convenient.

convention_aug08_4_631.jpg__800x600_q85_crop.jpg

In other words millions of Americans are not real US Citizens because they fit into that category of people who are disliked by Trump. So if Trump should become President you will have a Nation divided maybe splintered is a better word. Then what about Congress and the Senate, there is no guarantee they would play ball with him. Elections at both levels of Houses may change the composition completely. Would President Trump then resort to attacks on the Congress and hate speech against both Houses to get his way, inciting violence against elected Officials? I could see that happen if he remains true to form.

You see I work as a guide at the Canadian War Museum here in Ottawa. In Gallery 4 we have the history of the world from 1930-1945, the rise of the dictators in Europe, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany. You can listen to the speeches of the dictators to the faithful, hate is the main message, making the country great again is the other message. Those who oppose the program of the dictator must be done away with because they drag the country down. It all sounds very familiar to me and one could accuse candidate Trump of plagiarizing the speeches of the European dictators and not be wrong.

Many Americans say they will move to Canada if Trump is elected, that is a false assumption. Moving means immigration, the door is not open, many would not qualify, only a few could actually get in and it can take up to 24 months to see an application through if all goes well, you have no health problems, no prior convictions of any kind and are under 45 years of age with a job that is in demand in Canada.

05255v.jpg

I do believe that the American people will make the right choice and see through the politics of division and hate which would destroy the USA not make it great again. Trump is one big wind storm, all talk, simplistic approach to complex problems, the art of the quick fix, this is what is so dangerous.

Like the snake oil salesman at the Carny Show, Trump may become the candidate of the Republican party but gain the Presidency not likely. The GOP has also shown itself to be now the party of the fanatical fringe, the trailer park trash, the uneducated, of those who have been overtaken by events in a changing world and who want to bring us back to a mythical time in history that never existed.

Trump’s election to the White House would have dire consequences for political relations with Mexico and Canada and for the balance of power with Russia, China and other countries who are important trade partners. This is why he cannot be elected, the greater good is at stake.

The changing Forum area

Antiquity, Constantine, Forum, Maxentius, Penates, Rome

I have for many years taken a keen interest in the continuing study and work of archeologists in the area of the Roman Forum in Rome. What we see today is a modern view of the Forum brought to us by Benito Mussolini between 1923 and 1939, he ordered immense work of clearing in this vast central area of Rome. Hundreds of buildings built between 410 and 1800 where demolished to reveal the ancient temples and other public buildings of ancient Rome. During the middle ages the population of Rome was no more than about 50K it had once been 1 million prior to 410.  The Middle Ages was a time of great darkness in the European World and all knowledge went out, people could not read nor write, there were no schools and superstition took over. Only a handful of clerics, monks and Nobles could read and write but even then the basis of all education was Holy Scriptures and not much else.

It is only by 1297 with the end of the last crusade that Europe, mainly Italy will start to emerge from this long period of hibernation. In the meantime the area known as the Roman Forum had been reduced to a quarry and a cluster of houses and fortress like structures built amongst the great temples and other public buildings of Imperial Rome.

All the metals like bronze, silver and gold had been stripped away, the marble cladding removed and the columns of the many buildings re-used in the building of churches and monasteries. Many of these superb buildings had been reduced as we can see today to nothing more than foundations. Much of it buried by the yearly floods of the Tiber river which brought sediment and mud covering everything up in several meters deep.

However after 1300 many Nobles started to understand that the statues and precious marbles had value and were worth salvaging. The Renaissance gave rise to archeology and even the Popes and Cardinals became avid collectors of antiquities.

The other day I saw this painting of the Forum showing the Temple of Romulus, it dates back to the time of Emperor Maxentius and Emperor Constantine in the 4th Century. Though a plaque still identifies it by that name, historians now know that this is wrong and it is in fact a Temple dedicated to the Penates*

The  Romulus named was the little son of Maxentius who died very young. His father had the Senate of Rome vote his deification however no temple was dedicated to him. Much later this temple became a portico to the church of Saints Cosmo and Damiano (no longer saints since they never existed) behind it. It was later abandoned and closed. Its restoration to the state in which we see it today lasted for many years and it was re-opened to the public in 2010. There is not much to see inside, it is totally empty and the walls are bare. However the bronze doors are said to be the original, the lock in the door still works, the doors are at least 1600 years old.

3607112983_f54991568e_o.jpg

The Temple of the Penates (Romolo) as it appeared on the Via Sacra in the 19th century. Note how the Via Sacra is narrow, in modern terms a single car could ride down it carefully. This was the triumphal road leading to the Capitoline Hill and the Temple of Jupiter great and best.  No the Roman Legions did not march down it as Hollywood would have you believe. In fact the Legions were by Law forbidden from entering the Sacred boundary of the City. Only the triumphant general his face painted red for Military Virtue on a chariot accompanied by the Legions Standard bearer and all the treasures (spoils of war) on carts paraded on the Via Sacra with the captives and defeated rulers of Nations conquered by Rome.

tempio_omolo_1.jpg

The temple of the Penates as seen today. Note how the facade as lost the Christian ornaments and the side buildings added over time.

Penates* Household gods worshipped in conjunction with Vesta and the lares by the ancient Romans. Originally, two deities of the storeroom or kitchen pantry. The Romans never sat down to eat without placing a portion aside for the Lares and Penates.

A few weeks ago I wrote that our new home and now it is revealed it will be Charlottetown the Capital of the Province of Prince Edward Island. It has in common with these 3 places in Italy the following, with Pesaro on the Adriatic, music and culture, with Capri, it is an Island of great beauty and with Sicily, it has fine cuisine, seafood, beef, cheese and wines.

An aerial view of our neighbourhood, I can see our house on this photo (circled in red), in the Summer cruise ships come into the Harbour area on the Hillsborough river. You can see the entrance of the harbour giving unto the Northumberland Strait. From our living room window we can see down Prince street to the Harbour the ships as they dock.

So only 11 weeks left before we leave for PEI.

We have a lease!

ct-ae-0317-jones-20130314-001.jpeg

I will concede it was not announced from the Papal balcony of St-Peter’s basilica with the College of Cardinals looking on.

After months of searching we found finally a place in Charlottetown, PEI. Needless to say this is not a photo of our new place in PEI. It was a long search and very frustrating at times, the problem being that there are more homes for sale, than homes or apartment for rent. Also we were looking very specifically in the old core of the Capital only and no where else. This is a very small area, 9 blocks by 7 blocks, the stock of what is available is often heritage buildings 1780-1890, meaning that what is available is small, one bath and slanted roof ceilings in bedrooms, full of charms but next to no room for furniture, at least not 20th century furniture. Fashion in home decor and furnishings has drastically changed since 1900.

We also had to learn the way of the Island, everyone knows everybody. There are only 140K inhabitants on the Island. Everything is done word of mouth, friends recommend friends, it makes a difference. People are very friendly and helpful, often surprisingly so.

We did find our new place through a recommendation from a friend who put in a good word. The good stuff never comes to the open market, it is always un-advertised.

We are content with our new lease, I would not say excited, no, the word content is more apt. We wanted a sunny apartment and this one has 18 large windows facing North, South, East, West, is surrounded by large parks on two sides and the Harbor and Hillsborough River on the other. The view is quite nice and all in an historic setting. We are close to friends who are just a few doors down on the same street. The interior of this 1840 house is  quite modern, it was all redone just a few years ago with top of the line materials.

We will be able to entertain at home easily we have the space for it and will be able to have visitors stay with us, with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. We also have a deck so I can return to barbecuing, something I enjoy.

The move will come quickly in May, packing etc. now starts the fun of cleaning house and getting rid of stuff.
