Music you listen too

CBC, classical, Music, opera, Radio Canada

We listen to a lot of radio and every morning the minute we get up we turn on the radio. Per example this morning, a very bad storm was raging and we turned on the radio morning show from Halifax on the CBC. It has lots of music which appeals to a wide, if older audience, + 50. But the music has lots of references to souvenirs and memories relevant to anyone over 50. You also get the regional weather and news. The weather for the Maritimes, which impacts the whole area despite the fact we do not live in Nova Scotia. It is just across the Strait from us and quite visible some 12 Km away.

Then this afternoon on the eve of the new season of Metropolitan Opera Broadcast from NYC we had Canadian Tenor Ben Heppner of the CBC Saturday at the Opera with his guest Mary Jo Heath,Host of the Metropolitan Opera broadcast. The Opera today was a classic Hansel and Gretel usually played around Christmas time by Humperdinck.

On any given day we have music playing it is usually classical on the CBC or Radio-Canada. We never listen to local radio stations which only play musak pop with loads of advertisement.

What do you listen too or do you listen to the radio? Here are two songs I heard this evening at dinner on the Radio Canada show from Montreal with host Claude Saucier. Do you remember them?

Club, Dad, dinner, Food, Haviland, lobster, storm, surf, winter

Well our first snow storm of the Season is in full swing now. It started last evening with rain and winds and changed to snow squalls overnight. Poor visibility and dangerous driving or walking conditions. High winds with pounding surf and higher tides than normal, no time to go walk on the beach now, it can be dangerous. This weekend was the Christmas market weekend but the weather forced a change in schedule and most things are closed or re-scheduled until Sunday like the Santa parade.

We had a lovely dinner at the Club last night and enjoyed the Parlour fireplace. Many members who live within walking distance came. This is a good beginning to the Xmas Season.

Photo taken from our den, showing the famous Water Prince Corner Shop at the corner of Prince and Water street in old Charlottetown. This restaurant specialty is lobsters and seafood. They are famous because many celebrities have been for lunch or dinner and left testimonials. The Regis and Kathie Lee show was also taped at the location a few years  back and many tourists coming here to visit will make reservations. Being neighbours we can just cross the street and get a table. Not a big place just about 20 tables, but the food and service is excellent. The Winter Lobster Season started about 4 days ago and 250 boats went out to Sea, it is very dangerous work on the Ocean with waves and winds which toss boats about. Many here on the Island will have lobster for Xmas dinner at home, remembering to use sea water to boil their lobster, tap water won’t do.

One of the many fireplaces in the Club, this one is made of Pink Sicilian Marble which cannot be found anymore. Imported by the original owner of #2 Haviland Street, the young widow Esther Full-Lowden in 1869. This was her parlour to receive friends, after her death in 1896 the Mansion was rented out to the USA Government and this room was the American Consul’s Office, with 18 foot ceilings and fancy moulding. It was wonderful last night to sit by the fire and enjoy drinks with other members.

Today is very quiet with the storm raging outside. Sunday should be quiet also, I may go out to the Farmer’s Market to get my Dresden Stollen from Sabine and Michael S. who are natives of Dresden.

Today is also my late father’s Birthday, he would have been 89 years old. Here the two of us having lunch at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal around 2014.

First this photo of our Nicholas or Nicky for his friends. Every morning same routine, Nick loves to get up at 7:30am to go out for a short walk and then quickly in for his breakfast. Then he looks for a spot of sunshine and will lie in the sun like any hound loves to do. If there is no Sun well then he will point me to my chair in the living room by making funny little nasal growls, softly, plaintively and moving or jerking his head to indicate over there. I go sit down with my morning Espresso and he comes to sleep by me. Nothing complicated and it makes him happy, just snoozing away, such a good boy.

IMG_5315.jpg

As we come to the end of the Year 2019 and Christmas is just around the corner, I looked at my calendar for the past year, counted 85 events attended during the year. I also did at least 60 coffee mornings with various people, many with local politicians one on one to talk about issues. I am not counting all the other general activities on any given day like looking after Mr Nicky and Ms Nora.

Today is Black Friday, essentially an American tradition which jumped over into Canada. We bought a new Dutch oven from Paderno a well known maker of Canadian pots and pans and a local company, huge discount of 75% on the price. This is quality stuff and is usually not cheap. Could not resist and went to Canadian Tire to get a 6 Litre Dutch oven.

I also went to buy our Xmas Crackers for the table, they are all made in England, I also got fancy little bags to given to each one of our guests on Christmas Day Lunch. We will stuff the bags with nice small gifts and things. Our guests love those and the surprise is different for all, no one gets the same thing, there will be a candy cane, some chocolates usually filled with liquor from Anthon Berg of Denmark, a small candle, a fragrant fancy soap, some nuts in their shell and I don’t know what else.

Our crackers will be colourful, I really like those ones and their contents. I don’t know if a lot of people do crackers. Do You ?

Today the weather is quite bad, high winds around 70Km, rain changing into snow squalls tonight. The Santa Parade has been moved to Sunday which is suppose to be sunny.  Horrors of horrors, I saw my first snow plow today, spreading salt on the road.

Oh well, it’s Winter or late Fall …..

This is one of 2 videos on YouTube by Delia who is an icon of British Cooking,  she is now Dame Delia. All her recipes are great and easy to follow and so much fun. Even if you do not do any of these recipes, just watching puts you into the Christmas mood.

I have my own little chef at home for Christmas, Chef Will and for all these years we have always had wonderful Holiday meals thanks to him.

Here are some photos of Will working at making our Christmas Plum Pudding.  I do all the shopping so Will gives me a long list and often while shopping I will get an iPhone message asking that I buy this or that ingredient he needs.

IMG_5289.jpg

At the beginning this mix of bread and self-rising flour and eggs will be added to and blended with all the fruits.

IMG_5290.jpg

All the various fruits are mixed in and soaking in Brandy is added and must be stirred every 20 min. so the Brandy mixes in nicely with all those fruits. Please see the recipe published yesterday for all the details.

IMG_5292.jpg

The Suet, which you get at your local butcher and is an essential ingredient to making Plum Pudding.

IMG_5296.jpg

These are Jars of stem ginger in syrup another ingredient of the Plum Pudding. The raw ginger has to be peeled first and cut up.

IMG_5299.jpg

The plum Pudding in its dish and must now be steamed for 3.5 hours, this was done on 23 NOV.  and will be served on Christmas Day and flamed with a good quality Brandy. Will made 2 large ones and 2 small ones. I like plum pudding the next day cold for breakfast.

Gay, long term, love, relationship, together

Today Will and I met some 41 years ago. This morning around 08:30 am I was preparing to go out to shop when I looked at the calendar and suddenly realized it was the 23 November. I said; Will do you know what day it is? Frankly when we think about it, it seems like another world and time, from 1978 to today, so much has happened during all those years, so many places we lived in all around the World, it is all a whirlwind. Will is much better than I at remembering places and people in details, I tend to remember more the general details and some very specific event. All in all it has been a lifetime and yes we are like an old couple set in our ways and habits. I really can’t imagine my/our life differently and Will brought me a lot of happiness.

Tonight it is a quiet celebration at home, got some Osso Bucco for dinner and a bottle of champagne. Will has been very busy in the last few days making Christmas Plum Puddings and Mince Meat Pies. He has also made muffin with apricots and very nice potato chip cookies. I will post the Plum Pudding making photos, a labor of love, the recipe is by Chef Nigel Slater.

For years Her Majesty gave Plum puddings to all her staff as a Christmas gift, Fortnum and Mason were the provider. We received one such plum pudding many years ago. But has a sign of things to come HRH the Prince of Wales as ”shadow King” as he is known now, is taking on more and more of the daily duties of the Queen. Prince Charles is known to be on the parsimonious  side of life and he has changed the provider and orders the plum puddings now from Tesco. Shocking I know, but hey a gift is a gift, it’s the intention that counts.

So yes we are in the Christmas Season now and our plans are pretty much made. Now I have to get going on Cards and getting them out in the mail.

Cards, cuisine, Food, Friends, gifts, Holiday, Nigel Slater, traditions

For those of you like my friend Dr Spo in Phoenix who wonder if Christmas is near, well after Thanksgiving back on the first Monday in October, we all know there is Halloween but heck it’s time to plan and set dates and menus. Just this past weekend we went to two cocktail parties and two dinner parties. We have already planned our Christmas Eve and Day, menus set etc… For New Year’s Eve 2020 things are in motion and should be well organized fairly soon.

Today Will and I were looking at Nigel Slater’s recipe for Plum Pudding. He is a British Chef and we love his recipes. He writes for the Guardian newspaper in London. So off to the Bulk Barn to buy all the fruits needed for the Plum ”Christmas” Pudding. Buying these ingredients, it really put me into the mood. Next Sunday 24 November is stir up Sunday so time to start the process.

Ingredients

  • 350g/12¼oz sultanas
  • 350g/12¼oz raisins or currants
  • 150g/5¼oz dried figs, chopped
  • 125g/4½oz candied peel
  • 100g/3½oz dried apricots
  • 75g/2½oz dark glacé cherries, halved
  • 150ml/5fl oz brandy
  • 100g/3½oz ginger in syrup, chopped, plus 2 tbsp of the syrup
  • 2 apples grated
  • 2 oranges, juice and zest
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 250g/8¾oz shredded suet
  • 350g/12¼oz soft muscovado sugar
  • 250g/8¾oz fresh breadcrumbs
  • 175g/6¼oz self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • 2 old sixpences or coins

Method

  1. For this recipe you will need two 1.5 litre(2½ pint) plastic pudding basins with lids.

  2. Soak the sultanas, raisins, currants, figs, peel, apricots and cherries in the brandy overnight, giving it a good stir now and again.

  3. The following day, in a large bowl mix the ginger, syrup, apples, orange juice and zest with the eggs, suet, sugar, crumbs and flour.

  4. Stir in the soaked fruit and spice.

  5. Grease the two pudding basins and divide the mix between them. Add coins now if using.

  6. Cut two circles of greaseproof paper to cover the top of the pudding and fold a pleat down the centre to allow pudding to expand.

  7. Put lids on the basins and steam puddings for 3½ hours.

  8. Let puddings cool before removing greaseproof paper and covering tightly with cling film and lid. The puddings can now be stored in a cool, dry place until Christmas.

  9. To reheat, steam pudding for a further 3½ hours, turn out and flame with brandy.

Can’t wait to flame the pudding, such a treat.

I also added this recipe by Nigel because it is not Christmas without Stilton Cheese.

Stilton Cheese for me always brings back wonderful memories of Christmas and stops on the way home in London to shop. The quality and variety on offer in London is truly amazing. In Rome Christmas shopping was wonderful for wines and quality chocolates, cheeses, meats, olives, etc… Munich and Dresden Christmas Markets loads of fun, great food and tons of atmosphere. In Warsaw we had the most beautiful trees and again all the special Christmas food much of it borrowed from Jewish European Cuisine. Copenhagen was also great for Christmas Shopping so many beautiful things in the shops, style and elegance.

Also this year we have decided to return to good old fashion Christmas Cards and mail them with postage stamps to friends. We had been doing a lot of electronic cards in the last 10 years and well it is not the same and we enjoy receiving cards in the mail, it is so much more personal.

Finally today we went to the Pharmacy to get our Free Flu shot. In Canada everyone can, if you want get a free Flu Shot. It takes minutes and that is it, simple, how civilized.

So yesterday I took a little nap on the sofa and my Nicky wanted to snuggle up and he, like all Dachshund loves to squeeze in, so there with his big nose breathing in my face. He is just keeping an eye on me.

IMG_4391.jpg

The Cows Ice Cream shop love to sell souvenirs in the form of T-Shirts, Sweaters, caps etc. All of them have a funny saying on them and I saw this one in the window and I thought this is the sort of thing you want for Christmas, you know for that special cousin.

A little gate

If you happen to be in Potsdam follow the Schopenhauerstrasse from the city centre, you can walk it in fact and it is well worth it. You will arrive at this gate called Obelisk Hauptallee which gives you the direct entrance into the pleasure gardens of Sans Souci. It is a very vast garden full of statues, grottos, palaces, a Church and Chinoiserie pavilion.

fixedw_large_4x.jpg

As you follow this allee look to your right and you will see Sans Souci, if you continue straight on for 2 Km you will arrive at the Neues Palais. Both built by Frederick II the Great, Sans Souci is more like a big mansion, very private, where Frederick only invited those people he really wanted or enjoyed seeing. The Neues Palais or New Palace was for all the Official functions and to house his brothers Henri, William and Ferdinand when they came to Potsdam.  Frederick’s wife Elizabeth Christine of Brunswick lived at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin which he built for her, she very rarely was invited to come visit Potsdam and even then would be housed in the New Palace or in the City Palace in front of the Church of St-Nicolas.

When you visit Sans Souci, the decor and the layout is very much Frederick’s, it was all about the things he liked most from paintings to books. It is essentially high baroque architecture, he chose the colours, the decor and much of it reflects his taste for the exotic. He lived there with his Whippet dogs. He is buried with them in the front garden of his palace as he wished. After his death in 1786, Sans Souci was closed. His successors and family lived at the Neues Palais or in Berlin at the City Palace until 1918.

72441150_2713689355309817_9114592326407159808_o.jpg

The entire park is for pedestrians, it was also used for horse back riding given its vast space. Enormous renovation and restoration of the park and its buildings has taken place in the last 25 years again in an effort to bring it back to what it was before 1914. I walked it on 3 separate occasions and enjoyed its charm and peaceful beauty. You can easily spend a day or two here.

A new Berlin

Architecture, Church, Faith, Germany, House of One

I am writing this today Monday 11 November, Remembrance Day in Canada when we reflect on the Armistice which ended the First World War. Though I am told that the name First World War belongs really to the War of Liberation in Europe against Napoleon, his 12 campaigns or 12 years of War involving all the Empires and Kingdoms in Europe was then considered a World War by Europeans Princes.

Berlin in the 20th century  was then seen as a Capital of the enemy who wanted to dominate the world. Then the Second World War brought more hatred and calamity on us all. Millions perished, countries ravaged and the world ended up divided between the West and the East with in 1961 a Wall dividing not only a city, Berlin but an entire continent, Europe, a Nuclear Arms race and mutual assured destruction was a political doctrine during the Cold War 1946-1989.

Since the reunification of Germany with the fall of the Wall 30 years ago this week, the German Federal Government decided that a new chapter would be written and this one would focus on peace and cooperation at home and in the world. For Berlin, the Capital once again, the Regional Government of Brandenburg and the Municipal City Council Berlin developed a plan to focus on the Age of Enlightenment and its great thinkers and artists and to take a humanist approach. If you visit Berlin you will see it everywhere, a truly progressive city and outlook.

The project of  House of One on PetriPlatz on FisherIsland, the Medieval centre of the original City of Berlin is in step with the new concept or approach in developing Berlin of the 21th Century.

PetriPlatz was the site of the original Church of St-Peter in Berlin centuries ago. It was destroyed in 1944 in Allied bombings and remained a empty piece of land in East Berlin under the GDR Government.

The project is to build as of 2020 a building The House of One uniting all 3 monotheist religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, all having the same Abrahamic Foundation.

The “House of One” will comprise a church, a synagogue and a mosque. Three spaces connected to a central communal room.

The initiative became a foundation and the idea became a design. The model for which has already been exhibited internationally in Chicago and Paris – is special. Deep underground it preserves the archaeological remains of Berlin’s history and the various churches that were built, destroyed, rebuilt or bombed here. Above ground, it will rise some 32 metres into the sky, becoming a symbol of a new era.

The planned cost is around 43.5 million euros, donations coming from various countries. This Fall, the German Federal Government promised to contribute ten million euros, if the state of Berlin and individual donations could match that funding. Now the foundation stone is due to be laid on 14 April 2020.

This date was chosen very deliberately. 14 April 1783 saw the premiere of “Nathan the Wise” in Berlin. The great play by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) is probably the most important work of classic German-language literature on co-operation between Jews, Christians and Muslims. Lessing uses a “Ring parable” to explain that God loves all three monotheistic religions – and they are therefore duty-bound to be tolerant.

‘Petrikirche was the start of Berlin, which has now grown into a multicultural, multi-faith city. A lot has happened over the centuries, this is a sign of peace and tolerance.’says  the architect Wilfried Kuehn.

We buy our meat directly from a Farm outside Charlottetown about 20 minutes from us. The quality is very high and the butcher Drake knows his stuff. It is far better than what we use to buy at the grocery store. This month we got a roast beef about 3.5 lbs and last month we also got a roast beef same size. I also got a Veal roast which is my favorite but here in PEI it is very difficult to get, simply not on offer, I am told.

So I am trying this recipe below on the link and it all seems to be going very well, we invited guests for dinner. This being a long weekend, Remembrance Day 11 November, tomorrow will be super quiet and the only ceremony is at the Cenotaph at 11 am.

https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/roast_beef

The Weather has turned cold around 5 C. which is 40 F. and very windy, a cold Atlantic wind around 40Km per hour, though bright sun shine.
