The Official Birthday of HM Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada and UK in the 68 year of her Reign, the longest in Canadian and British history at Windsor Castle. Very Best Wishes for a Happy 94th Birthday from Canada.
June 10, 2020.
Today HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh celebrates his 99 Birthday.
Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born in the villa Mon Repos on the Greek island of Corfu on 10 June 1921, the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. A member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, itself a branch of the House of Oldenburg, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from King George I of Greece and King Christian IX of Denmark and he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones; Philip’s four elder sisters were Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie, and Sophie. He was baptised in the Greek Orthodox rite at St George’s Church in Corfu.
The Greek-Turkish War 1919-1922 went badly for Greece, and the Turks made large gains. On 22 September 1922, Philip’s uncle, King Constantine I, was forced to abdicate and the new Greek military government arrested Prince Andrew, along with others. His family were banished from Greece, the British naval vessel HMS Calypso evacuated Prince Andrew’s family, with Philip carried to safety in a cot made from a fruit box. Philip’s family went to France.
Because Philip left Greece as a baby, he does not speak Greek. In 1992, he said that he “could understand a certain amount”. Philip has stated that he thought of himself as Danish, and his family spoke English, French, and German.
In 1928, he was sent to the United Kingdom to attend school living with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, Dowager Marchioness of Milford-Haven, at Kensington Palace. In the next three years, his four sisters married German princes and moved to Germany, his mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and placed in an asylum, and his father took up residence in Monte Carlo with his new mistress. Philip had little contact with his mother for the remainder of his childhood. It was his uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten who became his tutor. In March 1947, Philip had abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, had adopted the surname Mountbatten and became a British subject.
The day before the wedding, King George VI bestowed the style of Royal Highness on Philip and, on the morning of the wedding, 20 November 1947, he was made the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich. Consequently, being already a Knight of the Garter, between 19 and 20 November 1947. He married Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and on her accession to the Throne in 1952 the now Queen Elizabeth announced that the Duke was to have “place, pre-eminence and precedence” next to her “on all occasions and in all meetings, except where otherwise provided by Act of Parliament”.
Philip was not crowned in the Coronation service, but knelt before Elizabeth, with her hands enclosing his, and swore to be her “liege man of life and limb”. On 22 February 1957, she granted her husband the style and title of a Prince of the United Kingdom, and it was gazetted that he was to be known as “His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh”. Philip was appointed to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada on 14 October 1957, taking his Oath of Allegiance before the Queen in person at her Canadian residence, Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Coat of Arms of HRH Prince Philip
“The design of the Arms was agreed and approved by The Queen and Mr. Thomas Woodcock (Garter King of Arms and Senior Herald in England), who is based at the College of Arms in London,” royal reporter Omid Scobie wrote on Twitter. The press release for the announcement also gave the first glimpse of Markle’s official letterhead as a royal.
Symbolism-wise, the Palace explained the meaning of everything in its press release: “The blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California coast, while the two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of The Duchess’s home state. The three quills represent communication and the power of words.” Markle did run a lifestyle blog, after all.
“Beneath the shield on the grass sits a collection of golden poppies, California’s state flower, and wintersweet, which grows at Kensington Palace,” the press release continued. “It is customary for Supporters of the shield to be assigned to Members of the Royal Family and for wives of Members of the Royal Family to have one of their husband’s Supporters and one relating to themselves. The Supporter relating to The Duchess of Sussex is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication.”
“A Coronet has been assigned to The Duchess of Sussex. It is the Coronet laid down by a Royal Warrant of 1917 for the sons of daughters of the Heir Apparent. It is composed to two crosses patée , four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves.”
Markle worked closely with the College of Arms during the design process so it’d be “both personal and representative.”
She is known as Her Royal Highness Duchess Meghan and is styled as Duchess of Sussex. She is not a princess and is not referred as such, that dignity is reserved to those born in the Royal Family. She also has to curtsy to her sister in law the Duchess of Cambridge because by rank she is more senior than Duchess Meghan. Her husband HRH Prince Harry is now 6th in line to the Throne and is unlikely to ever become King. Order of precedence is very important at Court and rank decides the life you will have, where you will live and the functions assigned to you by the Sovereign.
Today there is two birthdays I consider important, one is the birthday of Rome founded some 2771 years ago on 21 April by Romulus. To this day I think you can say Auguri Roma, bellezza eterna.
The other birthday is that of the Queen of Canada, Her Majesty Elizabeth II who is 92 years old and the oldest reigning Monarch in British history but not Canadian history, Louis XIV has that distinction. Nonetheless we wish her a wonderful Birthday.
Here is the Proclamation for our Parliament to open on 3rd December at 1pm. The Speech from the Throne will be on the next day.
ELIZABETH THE SECOND, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and Her other Realms and Territories QUEEN, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
The first business of the day will be electing a Speaker for the House of Commons which is usually done in a couple of hours at most. All parties vote and the candidates for the job are often people who are well liked by all Members of Parliament. There will also be routine administrative stuff and then the next day the Governor General will come to Parliament to read the Throne Speech giving the details of the Program of Legislations and other business the Government will introduce during the Session. It will give Canadians a good idea of what Prime Minister Trudeau intends to do.
Today is the State Opening of Parliament in London, this means the Queen comes to Parliament in Westminster to read the Speech from the Throne which is the legislative program of Her Government for the coming months. It is a way of announcing to all what Parliament will discuss and which bills will be studied.
We have the exact same formula in Canada, same ceremonial with small differences.
In Ottawa, the Governor General comes down Sussex Drive from his Residence at Rideau Hall in the State Landau with a mounted escort of the RCMP.
The Queen is 89 years old and the Duke of Edinburgh is 94. They both looked frail today. The Imperial State Crown weighs 5 lbs. or 4.3 Kg. Heavy if you have to wear it for 90 minutes. The train made of ermine is so heavy that it has to be carried by pages , the Queen would not be able to move forwards without them holding it up. She also must move forward while wearing the train because of the weight of it.
Prince Philip wears many decorations and I found out that he earned every one of them for his service during the Second World War in the Royal Navy. He wears the uniform of Admiral of the British Navy. The Queen’s gown is the same as in past years. She has a tendency now of wearing the same costumes instead of having new ones designed. She puts on the State Crown and the long train in the Robing Room which is some distance from the House of Peers (Lords) and is used only when the Sovereign comes to Parliament. I was told that she handles the Crown herself and makes sure it sits properly on her head, she is not helped with that.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall arriving at Parliament, he now attends all Opening of Parliament since he has been delegated by the Queen some of her duties.
The protocol of the opening of Parliament reminds us of the stability of the institutions that govern us and our traditions. This is why I have, like so many other Canadians, a problem with our current Prime Minister Stephen Harper whose dislike of Parliament is well known. He does not see the point of the Institution, he has ignored Parliament and tried several times now to undermine it and the Constitution so that he can remain in power and impose his own right wing agenda. All our Institutions are under attack with Harper, the Supreme Court, the Senate, the Constitution, Parliament and the Charter of Rights. The general Federal Election is coming soon in October and it will not be too soon for many of us.
