Today 2 June is the National Day of Italy. In 1946 Italy became a Republic on this day after a referendum to abolish the Monarchy, giving itself a new Constitution at the same time. So according to tradition, the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella will participate in Rome in various ceremonies including the military parade down Via Dei Fori Imperiali. Roma Caput Mundi, Italia bellezza eterna!
Here is a small recap of today’s activities in Rome.

Do you suppose Silvio Berlusconi is hosting any little celebrations of his own?

Italy has a reputation (real or not) of having crazy government. I wonder how many pine for a monarch or papal states?

I know that no one pines for the return of the Papal State because it was horrible living in fear of arrest and torture. Popes were feared and they liked it that way. It was a Theocracy like in Iran today. As for the King or the Savoy Royal House, they disgraced themselves and again are not fit to rule. The system of Italian politics today is because of their constitution which allows for proportional representation, so many parties and it divides the vote. But Italian politics today is very much like Roman Politics 2500 years ago, you can see comparison if you read ancient history.
