This year 2024 could see some changes in Canada, our current government headed by Justin Trudeau could face an election and the prediction of the pundits are not rosy. The boy wonder has plummeted in the polls, Justin is not popular, people are sick of his virtue signalling lectures. On the other hand nobody wants Mr. PeePee or Pierre Poilievre the leader of the Conservative Party or the Canadian GOP/Trump alliance. Canada does not have fixed election dates, despite a law being passed years ago on the topic, it is up to the Prime Minister to decide when there would be an election. There is a limit to his term and it will be in October 2025. BUT at anytime he could decide to go see the Governor General and request Her Excellency to dissolve Parliament so we could have a National Federal Election. Of the 44 elections since 1867 some 26 of them were won by the Liberal Party of Canada also known as the Natural Government of Canada. The Liberals have always been good at being that middle of the road slightly to the left governing party. Whereas the Conservative have always been since 1997 the right wing and now the extreme right wing party, friend of corporate board rooms, which does not appeal to many Canadians. We are not a people of extremes and this explains in part why the Conservative Party has not rule Canada much in the last 157 years. The Liberals have also been the party of the great social experiments which shaped Canada as we know it today. However the media is speculating heavily on what might happen this year. Currently the polls give 40% to the Conservative and 24% to the Liberals, meaning an election today would see a strong majority conservative government in Parliament and force the retirement of Justin Trudeau as party leader. Now that is today, many things can change between today and election day.
This week in 1936, King George V, grandfather of our late Queen Elizabeth II, died. Before his death he prophesied that his son David who will become King Edward VIII would not last 12 months as king. That came true very quickly and his other son Albert became King George VI. Queen Elizabeth said that everyone was afraid of Grand papa England as she nicknamed her grandfather George V. He was a old stern naval officer with tattoos. Also this week is the anniversary of the death of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. He died in January 1820, fairly young of pneumonia, his daughter Alexandrine will become Queen Victoria. The Island was name Prince Edward Island in his honour in 1800, while he lived in Halifax with his mistress Madame de Saint-Laurent. The Halifax citadel and the Clock tower were built during his tenure.
Finally tonight it looks like the primary in New Hampshire was not the garden walk predicted for Trump. Nikki Haley did well for herself. Would much prefer her as a Republican candidate, time will tell. Here in Canada, the Government is preparing for a possible Trump mandate in 2024. Knowing of his hate for Canada and his nastiness, there is much lobbying needed in both Congress and the Senate to protect our interests. Our Canadian politicians are panicking but Trump is not back in the White House yet and then there is the matter of his numerous trials.
What we have to really worry about the the Health Care situation on PEI, yesterday the Chief Medical Officer of Health PEI left the province, he was literally pushed out by our Government Premier Dennis King who like many other conservative premiers in Canada, wants to have the USA model of pay as you go health care. He also wants to build a medical school, spending $50 million on the facility, with no doctor or nurses available to teach. He has been warned repeatedly that this is a recipe for disaster with score of elderly doctors retiring, no replacements and current young doctors and nurses burning out because of the too heavy work burden. Currently we only have one ICU at the Queen Elizabeth hospital the other one in Summerside shut down months ago because of a lack of medical staff. Wait time in the E.R. can easily be on average 16 hours or more. At committee at the Legislature, which is usually composed of elected members of the Legislature, a government Minister Steve Myers showed up with the chief of Staff of the Premier, both basically call the departing Chief Medical Officer a liar and untrustworthy because he is from Ontario and not PEI. This was orchestrated by Premier King who sent his bully Steve Myers to attack and insult Dr Gardam. At interview that night Premier King claims he knows nothing of any of this, when it is known publicly that his own chief of Staff was the one doing the dirty deeds at the order of the Premier. So typical of PEI, so sad all around, no wonder we have so many social problems. We are lucky we have a family doctor and thus access to more timely care. However 20% of the Island population of 180K have no such access and must rely on public clinics. In Canada, PEI has the worse record by far of any other province in health care.
